Hdr from a single photo?

is making an hdr from a single photo "not correct?" I shoot my stuff in raw and sometimes i lug my tripod around and take multiple exposures but a lot of times i just take one picture and then duplicate it and change the exposure on the computer to make it into an hdr. is that wrong? or not recommended? just wondering, thanks
