Writing a story, need inspiration for a character?

I grew up with my large family in a small farmhouse on the edge of our property, we had many pets through the years. I can remember this one cat that would always fall asleep on the doorstep, and every time someone walked out they stepped on its tail. That old cat never complained though, as it was too lazy to move.
