My iron count came back a 9. What does that mean and what should I do. At this point I can not hold any food?

I have never had anaemia before and I have had a hysterectomy so I know that this is not the reason for my blood loss. My iron came back as a "9". The doctor is suggesting IV's since at this point I cannot hold down my meals. Is this bad?
