What are your views on Chris McCandless, aka Alexander Supertramp?

I've seen a lot of people label him as naive or arrogant or selfish, but I think a lot of people are missing the big picture. He wanted to prove that you don't need materialistic things for happiness, things like cars and money are obsolete. Pressures from society make us believe that those things are most important when I don't think they are. McCandless wanted to venture out away from all the negativity to find the true meaning of life, which I personally think is great. What do you all think? Any opinion is appreciated! :)
