What is this thing on my thermostat housing (in my engine bay)?

that is a coolant tempearature sensor....some thermostat housing have them in it.. some dont.. its not hooked up to anything... so you can take the thermostat housing off and replace it with whatever you want... i wouldnt go with some cheap chrome thermostat housint... i would put on a polished aluminum thermostat housing.
